The connection between the C.W. Post dynasty and the prominent Guest family is not a direct bloodline marriage, but rather a close, multi-generational intersection of neighborly, social, and civic ties among America’s Gilded Age and mid-century high-society elite.
The Families
The Posts: Founded by C.W. Post (inventor and founder of Postum Cereal Company / General Foods). His sole heir, Marjorie Merriweather Post, became one of the wealthiest women in American history and mother to actress/socialite Dina Merrill.
The Guests: Formed through the marriage of British Cabinet Minister Frederick Edward Guest (first cousin to Winston Churchill) and American steel heiress Amy Phipps (daughter of Carnegie Steel partner Henry Phipps Jr.). Their son was international polo champion Winston Frederick Churchill Guest, who married socialite and style icon Lucy Douglas Cochrane (”C.Z. Guest”).
Where the Two Dynasties Intersected
Long Island’s “Gold Coast” & the C.W. Post Campus
During the early 20th century, both families owned adjacent mega-estates in Brookville, New York.
Marjorie Merriweather Post built Hillwood, a 70-room mansion on 178 acres.
Neighboring Hillwood was the Guest family estate, Templeton, occupied by Winston and C.Z. Guest (today the de Seversky Mansion at NYIT).
In 1931, the Posts, Guests, and fellow estate owners banded together to legally incorporate the Village of Brookville to preserve their properties from commercial sprawl.
When Marjorie sold the Hillwood estate to Long Island University in the early 1950s, she endowed it in memory of her father, creating the C.W. Post Campus of LIU right beside the Guest estate.
Palm Beach Society & Winter Royalty
Both dynasties were central figures in the development of Palm Beach, Florida as the premier winter haven for America’s upper echelon.
While Marjorie Post presided over Mar-a-Lago, Amy Phipps Guest and later Winston and C.Z. Guest maintained prominent Palm Beach estates, sharing the same tight-knit philanthropic circles, equestrian circuits, and high-profile social galas.
Mid-Century High Society Overlap
C.W. Post’s granddaughter, Dina Merrill, and C.Z. Guest were prominent fixtures of mid-20th-century New York and Palm Beach café society, frequently co-listed among the era’s best-dressed icons and social philanthropists.
